Travel plans

Mountain View and the San Francisco Bay Area are well served by the San Francisco Intl. Airport and the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose Intl. Airport. Many airline companies, including the most important worlwide alliances offer flights to one of these two airports.

From any of these two airports, there are two options to reach Mountain View:

  • Train: Caltrain, the commuter train network connecting San Francisco with many of the southern towns in the Bay Area. You can consult the schedules and fares on-line, to plan your trip.
  • Car: You can rent a car easily from one of the multiple companies providing this service in one of these two airports.

Accommodation

UPDATE It looks like the main conference hotel (below) has run out of free rooms for the conference days. A good alternative is the Best Western Plus Mountain View Inn. It is very close to the conference hotel (5 mins. drive) and Castro Street (downtown and main area for hanging out after the conference). Good price/value rating, parking, breakfast and Internet connection.

The official hotel for WikiSym 2011 is the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites (Town Center), in Moutain View. You can consult the hotel brochure, to learn all details about the property.

We have obtained a special conference rate over the corporate flex rate for WikiSym 2011 attendees. To benefit from this special rate for the conference, please mention “WikiSym 2011” when you request your reservation. Attendees must book their rooms follwing one of these options:

  • Directly at the property.
  • By a toll free number from anywhere in US or Canada (800-445-7774).
  • By e-mail to Dilip R. Patel e-mail address.

The hotel does require a valid credit card number to be provided in order to confirm reservations.

For your interest, the hotel offers the following booking options (already including discount over regular rates):

  • Standard King - 300 sq ft - $163.99 plus tax
  • King Executive - 413 sq ft - Junior Suite - $173.99 plus tax
  • Two Queen bedded rooms - 413 sq ft - $173.99 plus tax
  • King Suite - 431 sq ft - $183.99 plus tax
  • King Suite with Jacuzzi - 431 sq ft - $183.99 plus tax
  • Two Queen bedded suite - 690 or 720 sq ft - $199.99 plus tax

These rates are valid for up to two adults per room and will include hot breakfast, Internet service and pre-arranged shuttle to the conference facility.

Socialize

Monday
On the first day of the conference, a reception with food and drink will be hosted on the Terrace. Get to know your fellow conference attendees and make plans from there! As you've already figured out, you really need a car to get between places in Silicon Valley, feel free to post plans in open space or here on the wiki to organize carpools.

Tuesday
Dinner in groups.

The place to go in Mountain View for restaurants and bars is Castro Street. Yelp has plenty to say on the matter: Mountain View Restaurant Reviews.

Post advice here if you have it, I'll be seeking input and will share what I find out!

  • I plan to travel down the ~25 miles to Santa Cruz to hit a DDD spot in that region. Though a little pricey, “Aldo's” or “Duarte's” seem to be popular choices for their Cioppino. If you know what DDD is (i.e., the Guy Fieri show), we'll probably get along. I have a rental car and would enjoy some accompaniment. - A.G. West
