Wikis in coorporate environment

There are a lot of companies that want to have some kind of wiki based knowledge management. But there are also concerns about security and vandalism in the upper and middle management. The concept of “everyone can change/contribute to everything” seems to be frightening.

Vandalism is no valid point against wikis in a corporate environment, as every action is logged.

Technical considerations

Important features of wiki software

  • Single Sign On, Authentication against AD/LDAP - Most FOSS Wikis support that
  • ACLs, granular permission system - Even if this is _not_ the true nature of a wiki it seems to be a general demand
  • Easy to use - modern design and good usability (i.e. WYSIWYG)
  • A lot of companies have a Microsoft Infrastructure. Therefore support of MSSQL and IIS might be important

Participation

Just creating a wiki in the companies intranet won't do the trick. It is important that employees are encouraged to use the tool. This can be archived through special trainings.
